Do you ever sit and stare blankly at your computer screen, piece of paper or whatever the hell you use, and wonder what to write? I do.

It can happen any time of the day, multiple times. You have something then it goes, like smoke. Its happening to me right now making this…my first article. Got to jog my mind somehow, and what better way to do that than to start writing. Lets do this together, grab your favourite beverage, and begin with these 5 writing prompts to get the juices flowing.

#1 World-building

The clouds float and swirl across an afternoon sky, with light rain and a firm wind. It is gray, cold, and the trees have been shaking, shedding their leaves as autumn had enveloped the land. Creeping ever closer to winter.

Starting with a nice world building piece, setting up the background is pivotal to establishing a foundation for your story. Whether you want to start your story this way is up to you, or perhaps it could begin with dialogue?

#2 Dialogue

What! You left the thermonuclear-rapid accelerator C5 drive system in Tin-tan’s scrapyard??? Dennis you idiot, why in the blazing sun of Kjorg’blorg’bong’zun would you do that for!?

Sold it for a lot of money…

Possessing the ability to create good dialogue is…good. It allows your characters to do small talk, however, this is used to progress the story, exchange important information, and learn about the world.

#3 Article/Blog writing

10 Tips To Start Saving Money

Do you want to start saving some extra dosh? Well here are ten tips for you to do that. Every now and then, or pretty much every day depending on your circumstances…finances can be a tad tight. We all want to have that sweet extra cash in our pockets when times become tough or when we just want to splash out, especially if it is for that special something.

Speaking of important information in the previous prompt, here’s one for article or blog writing. Creating a piece of writing other than fiction is imperative when delivering information (either opinion based or factual) out to the masses. So here is a little prompt for that.

#4 Feeling

His lips curved upwards along with those round, puffy cheeks that also rose graciously. A glimmer emanates from both eyes amidst a clear, sunny day.

One of the many attributes to writing is the ability to create feeling. What your characters go through during the story can either be a boon or a hindrance. It allows you to make obstacles for them to overcome. Or make them fall, gradually breaking into madness.

#5 Pathetic Fallacy

Lucy’s face beamed with the sun, as it grew brighter and brighter everything became fervent in colour; the leaves glistened, the grass a booming green, flowers glowed in all their pigments below a crystal clear sky.

Then she saw Todd up ahead, a cold breeze brushed against her and the sun hastened itself away behind a veil of clouds, clouds that appeared suddenly. Specks of rain splashed against her cheek.

A term to describe human emotion through the use of nature. We can easily relate to moments where we are happy and the weather goes perfectly with it. When we’re happy and the sun is bright it correlates to what we are feeling. When it’s a typical miserable day; rain, gloom and cold. It makes us sad. Ultimately, it all comes down to your perception. Perhaps you enjoy the rain?

Their you have it, five writing prompts for you. I chose different areas of writing to spice up the pile instead of sticking with one set e.g. dialogue. Now you have five prompts (hopefully) to jog your writing for whichever piece you want to go for. Whether that is world-building, dialogue, feeling, article/blog writing or pathetic fallacy. Go forth and write!
